Bending Iron

Tool Overkill

My projects tend to have a bit of a common thread running through them. The main thread is to start with a simple change, explore the possibilities that making that change opens up and then double down on the most ambitious version of what's possible.

An all too common 2nd thread is that they require a tool that I don't (yet) have, that more often than not, I end up having to design and then fabricate.

Full disclosure,...this started as a flooring project that then became a stair railing project that then became a wrought iron fabrication project that resulted in the need for this tool.

Yes,...I'm now slightly embarrassed after spelling it out like that.

Metal Bending-The Hard Way

I'll start at the end. In its first iteration the bender looked and worked like this. Bending would be accomplished by "point" bending multiple points along the length of the bar.

    A better curve

The head design was changed to more easily create a smooth continuous bend which was 90% of what the project I built this for, required.  Also, a friend with access to a machine shop made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
