The story behind this ill timed intervention was that in the process of changing over to winter tires I noticed scoring on the front rotors. A garage had done the brake work about two years earlier so the Element was taken back to them in case it was covered by a warranty still.
The warranty question is answered by the fact I did the repair. The answer to why I did the repair is that the estimate for the front brake repair grew into the need for rear brake job and some suspension repairs all of which added up to more than the Element was worth if sold.
As it turns out, the garage didn't even catch all of what eventually needed replacing. I'll come clean here and add that my making the innocent decision to replace the dust shields on the rear was the source for a lot of additional parts needing to be bought and a ton of extra work to be done. My bad!
Replacing one ball joint requires a LOT of disassembly
It may come as a surprise to those who know me but, believe it or not,..the first step was to fabricate a tool. (Yah,...no surprise there)
On Saturday morning after it had stopped drizzlling I leapt into action. I raised the car up on two jacks...and whipped the tires off with the efficiency of a seasoned veteran.
Who wouldn't be attracted to this perfectly glossy rust free, spectacle of perfection?? Unfortunately...as is ALWAYS the case with me, I lept before I looked and in this case, I was a LOT higher up than I thought!
